Ok, I got it
Austria - Achensee
I spent a week in Achensee with the Ramblers. Not my favourite place in Austria but the only one where I had a digital camera with me. The mountain tops are brilliant - but getting up to them can be a long slog!
On day One we went up the Ebner Joch (a summit not a col as you'd expect). A wandering route - you actually reach the summit from the back of this picture taken on the way up.
On the way up you get a good view of the Achensee
The summit - on top and coming off
On the second day we went to walk the Frontier Ridge between Austria and Germany
The walk in is some 7 to 8k long passing signboards showing the geological features - none too interesting if you're not a geologist! But, at last, you reach the Gufferthutte - hopefully that's our hill behind!
After this the walk becomes delightful. Through fields and then ascending to the ridge (the Schattlahnerkorpf? - my map finishes about 100m short of the ridge!). This looks back down on the Alm.
Of course there's a cross on top
Matt, our Ramblers guide, calls the ridge Nessies humps, and looking back to the summit you can see why. Germany to the left.
From the tops you can look into Germany and see their popular tourist lake of Tegernsee
Day three was wet so I walked on the far side of the Lake - a lovely relaxing day off. Day four took us to Perisau and a drive up the private Faltzhurntal to the Gramaijalm - and then off up a steep wooded valley to the Gramailerhochleger - a welcolme break.
The walk continues steeply up until - on the edge of a precipice the grass finishes and your route up scree to the top can be seen.
Looking back to our picnic spot and the (much harder!) hills beyond
A rest before the final ascent - the top still out of sight
The cross is just beyond the summit - so obviously you have to go there - and look back at the real highest point.
Then it's return the same way - there is an alternative but it involves highly exposed scrambling which, in Italy would have at least cables fitted - but not in Austria! It goes down beyond the cross.
The next day we were to do the wonderful Seekarspitze - Seebergspitze ridge. This is the view of the route up the first from my hotel bedroom.
And from near an Alm (closed!) on the way up we can look back on Achenkirche - our hotel is the last building in the valley)
A long hard slog gets you up to the summit of the Seekarspitze
Then it's along the wonderfully exposed ridge with the Achensee down below and with the formidable looking Seeburgspitze looming up in the second picture
Three views back along the ridge - when you reach the final approach to the summit you don't feel to much like taking pictures as there's nearly 200m of delightful easy scrambling to get you up to the Seebergspitze
On the way you'll probably meet friendly (and hungry) Alpine Choughs
For some reason we only got one pic of the summit cross on Seebergspitze
The last day was also wet so I was grateful to have an easy day on the flat when I visited what are probably the Tribacht Falls - none too spectacular even after the huge storm we'd had the previous night.
