This Le Plan is the one some 5k east of the Col des Aravis - on the way to the start we got this view of Mont Blanc.
The route is up the valley to the col on the right of the cliffs you can see
The big path follows the (true right) river bank until it appears to go into it when a faint track steeply uphill leftwards can be found (slippery when damp and covered with the autumn fall). This emerges into fields with the col in sight - though further away than it seems!
Interesting rock and shale formations are all around
Arriving at the Col du Niard (after reaching several false tops) you can wander at will - to another Col and the cliffs on your left or a grassy hill with great views to Mont Blanc on your right
The return journey is by the same route - back down into the valley now (as usual!) in evening shade. In theory you can follow the high road you can make out in the pic but this seems to have a large number of ups and downs and is longer with considerable stretches of tarmac. According to the signposts the route is 16k long and will take 4hrs return. We did it gently in 3 1/2 with photo stops - and these days I certainly don't walk at nearly 5k an hour!
