The Slieve League (Grey Mountain) is one of several places claiming to have the highest cliffs (at 306m) in Europe, however, in my view, the cliffs are not vertical enough to qualify - but, despite this, it's a magnificent walk.
If you merely wish to go up and down by the same and quickest route it is best to drive all the way up the road to the top car park. However the traverse is a wonderful walk and well worth parking at the first car park and walking up the road.
Some of the cliffs on the way to the start
Nearing the top car park a lochan on the right gives great views of the League
With a watchtower built (fearing a Napoleonic invasion) in the early 19th century opposite
These are the "highest" cliffs - big, as you can see, but far from vertical. The long flat stretch beyond the peaks is the "One Man's Path" - a long section with drops either side, but never less than a metre wide so though exposed is easy walking - unless you suffer from vertigo when you should be somewhere else anyway!
The track to these highest cliffs is exposed but not difficult - however to keep to the crest involves scrambling with steep drops either side and, if as usual there is a strong wind, it is (much) safer to keep to the easy track just below
Looking back to the lochan and road at the start of the hill walking
After scrambling or by-passing the top cliff edge huge cairns come into view - but this isn't the summit which is half a mile further on along the One Man's Path
To complete the traverse you have to return along this path and then go down left to a large track which you can either follow or go beyond and then down the big ridge to reach the same track much lower down reaching the road with your car a little to the right.
